About DPC Tech Review

Independent, hands-on technology reviews built specifically for the Direct Primary Care community.

Our Mission

DPC Tech Review exists because Direct Primary Care physicians deserve technology guidance that understands their unique practice model. Most EMR review sites evaluate software through the lens of fee-for-service medicine, where billing optimization and insurance workflow integration dominate the criteria. That perspective is not just unhelpful for DPC practices; it is actively misleading, because the features that matter most in a membership-based practice are fundamentally different from those that matter in a billing-driven one.

We test every product in a real DPC clinical setting before publishing our assessment. That means actual patient encounters, actual workflow integration, and actual measurement of time savings, usability, and reliability over weeks and months of daily use. We do not rely on vendor demos, feature checklists, or press releases. Our reviews reflect the lived experience of using each product in the context where it will actually be deployed.

How We Review

Our review methodology is designed to produce assessments that are genuinely useful for DPC practices making purchasing decisions. Every product we review goes through a structured evaluation process that begins with installation and onboarding, continues through several weeks of daily clinical use, and concludes with a comprehensive assessment across multiple dimensions including usability, feature depth, DPC workflow fit, mobile experience, support quality, and total cost of ownership.

We assign two scores to every product. The overall score reflects the product's quality as a technology solution in absolute terms. The DPC Fit score reflects how well the product serves the specific needs, workflows, and values of Direct Primary Care practices. A product can be technically excellent but poorly suited to DPC, or it can be modest in absolute terms but perfectly tailored to the DPC model. Both perspectives matter, and we believe that providing both gives our readers the information they need to make informed decisions.

No Sponsored Content

We do not accept payment from vendors in exchange for reviews, favorable scores, or preferential placement. Our reviews are funded entirely through the site itself, and our editorial decisions are made independently of any commercial relationships.

Real Clinical Testing

Every product is deployed and used in an active DPC practice before we publish. We believe that the only way to understand how a tool performs is to use it under real clinical conditions, with real patients, over a meaningful period of time.

DPC-First Perspective

Our evaluation criteria are built around the DPC model. We prioritize features like membership management, patient communication, clinical efficiency, and workflow simplicity over insurance billing optimization and coding compliance tools.

Regular Updates

Technology evolves quickly, and a review published today may not reflect a product's capabilities six months from now. We revisit and update our reviews regularly to ensure they remain accurate and useful for physicians making decisions today.

Our Rating Scale

We use a 10-point scale where the score reflects our overall assessment of the product's quality and value for DPC practices. Here is how to interpret our scores:

  • 9.0 - 10.0Exceptional. A category leader that sets the standard.
  • 8.0 - 8.9Excellent. Highly recommended with minor reservations.
  • 7.0 - 7.9Good. Solid choice with some notable limitations.
  • 6.0 - 6.9Adequate. Functional but better alternatives exist.
  • Below 6.0Not recommended for DPC practices.
